Winter
We started the year diving deep into one artist’s extreme nail set-up with his trusty robotic sidekick, Uma—Charles Aweida has been hailed as an artist of the times. Then we looked in the mirror and asked, Is skincare our modern day Holy Grail? After breaking down dozens of products and swapping nightmarish skin struggles, it sure as heck seems like it. When the end of January came, we sat down with Adrian Octavius Walker and how his art impacted the realistic discussion of being a black man in Oakland. The work, yet beautiful, spoke to a much deeper topic of being. Lastly, came our annual Big Beauty Edit highlighting brands big and small who make the Bay Area a much more beautiful place.
Spring
As we rang in April to buckets and buckets of rain, we also rang in a flurry of interviews and profiles that made us feel more connected to our local. Stories such as Sherri McMullen in her Oakland flagship or Soleil Ho as she started her new position as SF Chronicle’s food critic. On Instagram, we got front and center at Oaklash, Oakland’s only drag festival.
Later in the season, we gathered a list of Mother’s Day gifts to pass on to dear old momma. (Pro-tip: these double for fabulous holiday gifts as well.) To round off the season, we met up with the nearly about to pop, Bethany Eden, at her show “Cleanse” to talk about what the phrase really means to her.
Summer
Summer charcuterie boards littered our Instagram feeds left and right, leaving us no choice but to join the team. We psychoanalyzed the process of creating such a cheese board. And no, we’re not professionals, but we think we made some solid points. We then continued eating our way through summer with an evening at Villon and Charmaine’s at the Proper Hotel. City views and full stomachs left us blissfully happy. We rounded out the season with a jaunt (or several) in the Big Outdoors Guide. Our inaugural guide was so well-received by you lovely readers, it actually blew our hiking socks off. As one of our top-performing guides of all time, we’re humble bragging our way into the new year.
Fall
The fall brought a lot of time to reflect on living in the Bay Area—especially when we visit the home exhibition, “Ours”, the art installation that used an entire home to tell the story of how people are interconnected. Speaking of being interconnected, we launched our annual Class Of series, highlighting the Bay Area doyens who truly embody being a cool human. Everyone from cooking, to activism, to art and fashion. Coming together under one roof to show that we are different but ultimately the same. Lastly, we inducted Issue 9 into the Bob Cut universe, proudly featuring Peach Tree Rascals as our cover story.
